Healthy Tree Services

Big "O" is pleased to offer a range of tree care services for residential and commercial clients. Our arborists can help you choose from one of the options below. Contact us to arrange a consultation to address your specific tree care needs. View photos of these specific tree care services here.

Bracing/Cabling
Do two or more major limbs of your tree need additional support? Are two or more major trunks competing for dominance? We install traditional dead end steel cables as well as the more “tree-friendly” Cobra cabling systems to support the tree and keep you safe. Weak branches are the cause of a majority of storm damage.

Crown Cleaning
Does a mild windstorm leave you with broken branches all over your lawn? Crown cleaning involves trimming the tree to improve or eliminate problematic or dead limbs. This type of pruning also improves the overall aesthetic quality of the tree. The before/after difference can be subtle or very noticeable depending on the amount of dead branches presently in the tree. Here are some examples.

Pruning
We love trees, so, we take it personally when we see a tree that's been topped. (Don't get us started!) We offer a wide range of tree pruning options for every situation and budget:

Aesthetic
Do you need to prune a tree so it looks it's best? We can do that while maintaining the tree's natural grace.

Salvage/Restorative
Trees that have been damaged in storms or topped require salvage pruning. This type of pruning has the long term goal of improving the structure of the tree, decreasing maintenance, and keeping your tree healthy for as long as possible.

Structural
Structural pruning is a preventative measure for tree health. Structural pruning targets future problem branches and removes them. You're left with a structurally sound tree less likely to fail. Structural pruning works best when a tree is small, but also works for older trees.

Thinning
Limbs in the outer canopy (and sometimes the inner canopy) are selectively thinned to give the strongest branches room to grow. There are other benefits, too. Thinning allows more sunlight to reach the ground, increasing air circulation within the tree (reducing the risk of fungal infection), and decreases the risk of blow-over damage. We thin trees with an eye to maintaining the natural grace and beauty of your tree.

View
Pruning views involves removing branches in the interior portion or upper portion of a tree to “pull-back the curtain” and reveal a view of mountains, valleys, or rivers. We have done countless view pruning projects in the Wintergreen resort area, and other places.

Plant Health Care (PHC)
Tree care is included in our routine maintenance service, the PHC program.

Stump Grinding
Sounds simple enough, but, there are four good reasons you might want to hire Big "O" to remove an unwanted tree stump. First, we can complete the job someone else started — leaving lawn where there was once a tree. This eliminates the need to mow around the stump, and prevents new sprouting growth (benefits #2 and #3). Lastly, many customers find a leftover stump aesthically unpleasing, so, off it goes to the chipper!

Removal
Warning! Do not attempt to remove a tree yourself - it can be very dangerous work. If a tree is growing over electrical wires or has fallen across the a home or stream it requires special safety considerations to remove it. Likewise, removing big trees in tight spots can present danger, too. Big “O” Tree and Lawn service has the experience to determine the most efficient way to remove your tree safely.

Root-Collar Excavation
Roots emerge from the truck of a tree when it is improperly planted. This will kill your tree, and, depending on the tree's size and location may present danger. We remove excess soil and debris around the trunk and excavate to find and remove girdling roots. See the root-collar excavation process and learn more here.
